Reducing and Managing our Garbage
About Recycling Centre, Bottle Depot, and Garbage Pickup
Denman Island has plenty of options for recycling, reusing, reducing, and when needed, disposing of waste, all locally managed. Islanders are enthusiastic about minimizing and responsibly processing their garbage and ask visitors to do the same.
The Recycling Centre and Bottle Depot is the community hub for recycling and disposal of refundables. Denman doesn’t have curbside pick up for recycling; instead, visitors and residents take these items to the Centre.
The Recycling Centre takes packaging of various kinds, batteries, motor oil, scrap metal, hazardous waste, small appliances, and tires. Consult the Waste Management Guide brochure for more detailed information. Please sort in advance and follow the guidelines in the brochure to make life easier for our staff and help our recycling program run effectively and efficiently.
For Recycling Centre and Bottle Depot hours see the DIRA website.
The Denman Island Freestore, also at the Recycling Centre, accepts clean lightly worn clothing, books, toys, and household items in good condition, and is a fun and supremely affordable way to shop. It’s typically open Saturday mornings, but to confirm opening hours check the DIRA website.
Garbage pick up for any waste that can’t be recycled or turned in for a refund happens once a week in summer and fortnightly in winter. For the garbage collection schedule see the DIRA website. You will need a stick-on garbage tag for each bag, available at the General Store or the Recycling Centre.
These waste management facilities and operations are managed by the Waste Management Committee of the Denman Island Residents Association (DIRA), a local volunteer committee.
