Abraxas Books, Art, and Cafe is a convivial and multi-purpose hub for Denman artists, writers, readers, community organizers, lovers of fine coffee and home-made sandwiches, and anyone wanting a welcoming place to hang out.

It is also an art gallery. The café, accessed through the bookstore or via the back entrance from the deck, hosts rotating exhibits of works by local artists. Owner-operator Francesca (Tachi) Barker is herself an artist, so you might see some of her paintings or drawings and, if she’s not busy making espresso or managing book orders, she’s always happy to chat about the art on her café walls.

In the bookstore, you’ll find fiction, non-fiction, and poetry books by local writers, some focussing on Denman Island culture, geography, and history. As well, the bookstore sells a variety of art cards by local artists and you might find locally made t-shirts and other items, depending on who’s making what at the time.

This small-but-mighty space also carries gifts, puzzles, socks, beach toys, art supplies, calendars, music-making supplies, stationary, Denman Island chocolate, and office supplies, while of course the main focus is the judiciously curated selection of books.
