Visit Denman Island in March – just a 10-minute ferry ride from Buckley Bay – to see the natural phenomenon of thousands of marine mammals and sea birds feasting on the herring and spawn on our shores. It’s a great time for a getaway for nature lovers and photographers.

In March, Denman Island hosts 4 live music events, a peaceful demonstration against the herring fishery, a book launch, a Spring Equinox workshop, a spring break nature camp for kids, and several unique and fun ways to get your body moving!

Wildlife Viewing during the March Herring Spawn!

In March herring come to the east coast of Vancouver Island to spawn. It’s a spectacular sight as the waters turn a milky light blue from the herring milt and attract thousands of birds and marine life to the area around Denman Island.

You can see gulls, many species of ducks, eagles, ravens as well as river otters, seals, sea lions and even orca and humpback whales in Baynes Sound and Lambert Channel off of Denman Island.

Hornby Island hosts a Herring Fest March 5-8, 2020, with Herring ‘school’, films, boat rides and a dance! If you want to see wildlife but don’t want the crowds, stay on Denman Island for a quiet visit.

Tips from Visit Denman Island

TIP#1: Our shores will be covered with herring spawn this month, please tread lightly, don’t collect seaweed, and maintain a respectful distance from wildlife.

TIP#2: DEER ALERT! Please travel the road with caution and expect to see deer.

TIPS to avoid deer collisions:

  • Use a seat belt to protect yourself in the event of a collision with a deer
  • Drive close the centre line as traffic permits – leaving extra space on the edge of the road
  • If you see one deer crossing – expect another to follow!
  • A second fawn often follows a doe with a fawn a moment later
  • Deer sometimes reverse and run back – give them time
  • Dim the headlights to reduce the deer’s confusion

TIP#3: Please tread lightly on our rural Island. Drive the speed limit, take trash with you, and respect your neighbours.
